259 people arrested for various charges in the North West
18 August 2012
National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega on Friday confirmed that 34 people were killed and 78 others wounded at the Lonmin Marikana mine in North West on Thursday.
259 people have been arrested for various charges, ranging from illegal gathering to murder.
Meanwhile Conflict resolution specialist in the mining industry Chris Jacobs says the writing has been on the wall for months that a tragedy of this kind was looming.
He argues that leadership in the mining industry and trade unions did not do enough to stop this from happening.
Jacobs has urged stakeholders to address the root of the problem in order to stop the violence continuing.
