The African National Congress celebrated its 101st birthday over the weekend.

President Jacob Zuma addressed ANC members at Kings Park Stadium in Durban, where he committed his party on fighting corruption in the country.

Opposition Parties welcomed his speech but the Democratic Alliance said there are few things that need to done to show that they are serious about fighting corruption.

DA Shadow Deputy Minister Debbie Schafer said if the ANC wants the South African people to believe that they are serious about fighting crime and corruption then President Zuma needs to take the following steps.

Schafer says first the President  must instruct his attorney to make available the spy types and other relevant information that the DA has been fighting to obtain, since the 783 charges against him were withdrawn by the NPA, if the president has nothing to hide then there is no reason to continue obstructing the DA’s access to them.

Schafer adds secondly President Zuma must appoint a permanent head of the special investigations unite, which has now had an acting head for over a year, the person he appoints should be someone who is independent and who is a person of integrity, in whom the public can have confidence.

Lastly Schafer said he must appoint a permanent head of the national prosecuting authority once again this person must be a person who is fit and proper and someone with the utmost integrity and independence.
